Friday Flowers Club #15~Bolving

Hello Friends.

I had a great swim this week. One of those intangible experiences where friendship, landscape and nature frame the day and the canvas is painted with laughter and gratitude.

Barbrook is a beautiful area, and given the location and date it reminded me of the time we turned up at the “World Bolving Championships” one Saturday evening back in 2019, a time before Pandemics, school runs and NG Botanica.

Bolving. You won’t find it in the Dictionary. Technically, the term doesn’t exist, but the practice certainly does. When Red Deer stags enter their annual rut they like to make quite a noise about it, and every October White Edge and the wider Barbrook area is a cacophony of sound. This is Bolving. And every October the Eastern Moors Partnership used to run their championships, where a few hundred people would walk out onto the old reservoir wall and bellow across the moor, waiting to see if the Stags bellowed back. Points were awarded for delivery, volume, and response. It was one of the strangest and most fun days I think I have ever had in the Peaks.

No Bolving as such this week, just three friends out in the wilderness enjoying each other’s company and grounding ourselves in the landscape, with a few visitors for company….giant, hairy, stripy caterpillars and a majestic stag.

Friday Flowers this week therefore are inspired by the autumnal landscape of Barbrook, mixing in some beautiful orange protea to help us celebrate spooky season.
