Friday Flowers Club#6~Haga
Hello friends.
The hedgerows are beginning to show their colours, and how lucky are we to live in an area with such an abundance of them!
The first Bronze Age farmers cleared woodlands to make fields. On occasion, strips of woodland were left to mark the boundaries. These are our oldest hedgerows, or ‘Hagas’ in old English, meaning ‘boundary’ or ‘enclosure’. They are irreplaceable pieces of living history and vital habitats for our native flora and fauna.
The sight probably most associated with our hedgerows in May is Hawthorn, which starts coming into blossom around now. In fact it is often called ‘May Blossom’ and used in many springtime celebrations.
And so inspired by walks around our area, in particular Ringinglow (a hotbed for Bronze Age archaeology and home to some brilliant hedgerows), Bouquets this week will be a May Haga themed white and green, with the odd splash of colour.
